But while I’ve been so focussed on nagging the kids, I now realise I’ve neglected my dog.
Sunny’s our 7yo Jack Russell – Cavalier cross. We’ve given him regular “dental chews” and cuddles but we haven’t regularly brushed his teeth and now – like 1 in 4 other Aussie dogs – he has what they call “grade 2 dental health”, which means signs of moderate dental disease.
He’s going to need his teeth cleaned by a vet under anaesthetic, and it’s not going to be cheap.

Here’s Sunny’s new regime, based on their advice:
- Brush daily. If it’s good enough for me and the kids, it’s good enough for Sunny too. (They even have bacon-flavoured toothpaste for dogs.)
- Some premium dental and prescription dental diets can also reduce the development of plaque or tartar.
- Occasional chewy treats and dental toys that are specifically designed to reduce plaque or tartar, promote healthy gums and, ahem, freshen his breath.
